If you are someone in the Philippines who’s into cosplay , this should be another exciting year for you.
The Philippines has always been an active country on the world map when it comes to cosplaying, boasting a healthy cosplay community with several Filipino cosplayers already celebrities in the international scene.
This year, they’re lined up several big events starting with roaring success from the recent KPOP Cosfest in March. Here are some up and coming events that you can look forward in the next few months:
When: 7-8th May 2011, 10 am
Where: Megatrade Hall 2, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City
What to expect: Comics, Movies, Art and Lots of Cosplay Fun
When: 18th June 2011
Where: Megatrade Hall 1-2-3, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City
What to expect: Big time cosplay events, toy fairs, comics and anime
When: 23rd Jun 2011
Where: Event Center, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City
What to expect: Singing contests, anime exchanges, cosplay participation and a lot of people
No major cosplay convention in the Philippines is complete without its growing network of famous cosplayers, so grab your camera if you’re planning to attend it. While their attendance is far from confirmed this early of the year, expect to at least catch some of them in action. Here are some big names that should be on your watch list:
Alodia Gosengfiao, 23, Artist, Model, Professional Cosplayer

Easily the biggest name in Phillipine’s cosplaying scene, Alodia is a veteran who has represented Phillipines internationally in a cosplay competition. There’s even a Wikipedia page dedicated to her. While she is clearly a natural beauty, her amazing costume design, poise and neat makeup is what makes her stand out in the crowd. Keep an eye on her – she should have a swarm of people around her.

Ashley Gosengfiao, 22, Model, Dancer

Alodia’s sister, equally famous and definitely just as competent when it comes to photographic talent and costume design. Along with Alodia, Ashley has represented for Philippines in international events and will certainly be one of the few everyone will be looking out for.

Zhel Guiral, 22, Nurse and Teacher

Zhel started cosplaying 4 years ago in college and has gotten even more enthusiastic following her graduation. Aside from her work as a nurse and teacher, she devotes her time mainly to cosplaying. She has admirably admitted that her sister is the one who sews her costume, but she doesn’t slack either, being in charge of props and sweating her sister when she seams.

Miguel Mercado

Miguel is like the leading male star in a movie full of beautiful actresses. The veteran male cosplayer is part of Team Tuxedo and has built up a big reputation of being a multi-talented artist, photographer, cosplayer and perhaps even actor. In the Filipino cosplay scene dominated by famous females, Miguel certainly stands out as one guy to look out for in the upcoming events.
