Why the latest generation of gamers should be thankful

These days, online games are taken for granted. A lot of players, especially the younger ones, don’t count their blessings.

Gamers who were born after 1990 are lucky. They may not know it yet, but they are definitely amongst the most fortunate out of all the people that play video games.

Let me ask you this: can you remember a time before wireless controllers? Do you remember a time when [playing poker](/socialplay/MatchMove Games-poker) didn’t involve the internet?

Better yet, can you remember a time when you had to run games on DOS?

If you can’t, I envy you. Though I’m still relatively young (in the under 30 category), I’ve been gaming since a very young age. Because of this, I’ve experienced many of the painful moments associated with being a gamer.

I remember a time when you weren’t able to save your game on the SEGA Genesis.

I also remember a time when having a 486 processor meant you had the most powerful computer on the planet.

I even remember a time before the CD-ROM was a widely accepted storage medium!

Of course, even I have to count myself lucky. I wasn’t around for the awkward beginnings of video games, and wasn’t around to witness people playing Pong and Space Invaders. My first true gaming memories involve the original Nintendo, and Super Mario.

That being said, I still can’t believe how good we have it now. We have easy access to thousands of games at our fingertips, and can play them at any time. There isn’t even a need for any advanced hardware anymore, since a lot of games can be played from your browser!

Excellent games like Bejeweled Twist and Fishdom 2 are available on demand, and take mere seconds to load. For those of us who remember having to load games on DOS, this is nothing short of a blessing.

Add that to super-powered consoles and graphics that are almost life-like and it’s hard not to feel grateful that technology is where it’s at today.

15 years ago, no one would have thought that games like Peggle would be available on their browser. They wouldn’t have believed that entertaining titles like Plants vs. Zombies would be able to run on just about any screen, be it a PC, laptop, mobile phone or TV!

Just remember, it wasn’t always this way. Be happy that you live in the present!
